Alfred James Hunt was born in Herringswell in 1891 (Mildenhall Q2-1891 4A:811), the son of Francis and Eliza Jane HUNT (née DOCKING).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Warren Hill, Herringswell with his father Francis HUNT [52] a horsekeeper born Tuddenham; his mother Eliza [48] born Tuddenham; brother William E. [20]under gamekeeper,born Elveden, sister Eliza [13] and brother Stanley G[7] both born Herringswell.

1911 census...Aged 19, under game keeper, he was at Black Firs, Marston Green, Birmingham boarding with the Bailey family. Thomas Bailey was a gamekeeper and his family were all from Watton or Mildenhall.

He married Ada Annie RICHARDS (b.22-4-1886) (Nottingham Q4-1915 7b:671). Her address on the pension card is 105 Cinderhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. "Soldiers Died" have him later residing in Cinderhill, Nottingham.


Enlisted in Coventry.
It was during the battle around the Flers-Ginchy road, at Ginchy Wood. The Battalion war diary has a brief entry
"16 September 1916 - After a fairly quiet night the enemy shelled our position and lines in near continuously throughout the day. Infantry on our flanks attacked the German line with moderate success."

In fact they had heavy losses on 16th, 116 killed of which 80 have no known grave.
21 Officers and men were buried in Guards Burial Ground, Ginchy. Alfred appears to have been one of them. They were moved in 1919 to their present resting place.
